The alleged torture and rendition that came before it might just be a major scandal&#8221; involving issues of rendition and torture:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2013\/nov\/13\/terror-suspect-burqa-mi5-rendition\">The Real Question About the Terror Suspect Who Fled in a Burqa: Did MI5 Bring Him Here Illegally?<\/a> (Guardian)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Much of what is followed today is the interpretation of a group of scholars dating back hundreds of years, rather than the literal teachings of God. The Qur\u00e2\u20ac\u2122an is a complex and dense book, &#8230; [and] there are some interesting and brave attempts by female scholars to challenge accepted wisdoms not by deviating from the Qur\u00e2\u20ac\u2122an, but by returning to it&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/religion\/2013\/11\/can-you-be-muslim-and-feminist\">Can You Be a Muslim and a Feminist?<\/a> \u00c2\u00a0(New Statesman)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Islamic scholars need to understand American culture before they judge it. In the words of the\u00c2\u00a014th\u00c2\u00a0century jurist, Ibn Qayyim\u00c2\u00a0al-Jawziyya, &#8220;[I]t is imperative that (the scholar) understands &#8230; [a people&#8217;s] cultural traditions and their habits because fatwa (religious rulings) change with the changing of time, place, culture and condition&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/muslimmatters.org\/2013\/11\/11\/fatwas-responsibility-muslim-scholars-america\/\">Fatwas and the Responsibility of Muslim Scholars in America<\/a> (Muslim Matters)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00c2\u00a0Muslim Brotherhood may be &#8220;authoritarian, arrogant and most of all, incompetent&#8221; but its &#8220;political rivals (mainly liberal and left-wing parties and organisations) are no less so.
