Uprooting Christian Zionism

[On November 30, 2025, the Green Olive Collective held a webinar on “Uprooting Christian Zionism,” moderated by Eric Bleicher. This is a summary of the takeaways from that webinar. It is not intended as a transcript.  You may watch the entire webinar here.]

Ghassan Najjar, Burin Land and Farming Cooperative.

It is a common misconception that Palestinians seek international protection. What we really want is freedom of the mind, not just for ourselves but for all. There is a difference between Judaism and Zionism. The difference is colonialism. The Christian Zionists are a tool for propaganda to justify the colonialism.  It will fail because you cannot remove the sun from the sky.

Omar Haramy, Sabeel Liberation Theology Center.

What does it mean to be a Palestinian and a Christian? Although many churches have rejected Christian Zionism, it has established a significant influence. We Palestinian Christians are being dispossessed and it cannot be justified by the Bible. We live in the fertile crescent. It is a place of transition from nomadic existence to settled life. The false theology victimizes Jews as well as Palestinians and Christians.  Jews are told they must be killed unless they convert to Christianity. Christian Zionism turns us into bad neighbors. A good theology makes us into good neighbors. We understand religion to be a movement to defend the people at the margins. If we believe God wants us to dispossess and persecute the vulnerable, then we either worship a false god or we have got the story completely wrong. We distinguish between Christians who support Israel and Christian Zionism.

Najjar. I disagree. Support of Israel today is support of genocide.

Haramy. If I give an alcoholic friend alcohol and keys to a  car, I am not really his friend.

Najjar.  We are fighting for freedom, for our dignity and for our land. We do not want peace under occupation.
