Bush’s interest in democracy is, obviously, a facade. At home, he is claiming presidential powers far beyond those claimed by any previous chief executive. He is ignoring requirements for warrants for surveillance and wiretapping, denying due process to American citizens he has proclaimed to be “enemy combatants,” and generally promoting a totalitarian, authoritarian culture in his administration. These tactics are, at best, un-American. They are most certainly undemocratic. How could anyone take his interest in democracy seriously?
